What are foggy headlights?

Take a look at your headlights. Are they crystal clear, allowing you to see the bulb inside? Or are they covered in a thin fog – like a film or haze? If you answered yes to the latter, you have foggy headlights on your hands. It could be time to consider headlight cleaning.

What causes foggy headlights?

Several factors cause foggy headlights. The main culprit in New Zealand is that oxidation might have occurred. In most modern cars, headlights are made of polycarbonate. Over time, exposure to UV radiation (which is particularly bad in NZ) causes cracks, haziness and cloudiness, and sometimes starts yellowing as the manufacturers coating degrades.

Other factors include road dust and dirt, particles hitting lights at speed and even water vapours.

Do cloudy headlights really matter?

Aside from making your car look unloved and older than it really is, foggy headlights can be dangerous for you and other drivers on the road.

Cloudiness of your cars headlight lenses reduces the effectiveness of the headlights themselves by decreasing the amount of light that can pass through the lens. This greatly reduces the range and quality of vision headlights produce at night time, meaning the driver is more likely to miss obstacles on the road.

Cloudiness also tends to scatter to beam of light coming from your headlights - instead of being directed at the road, it causes the halo effect you see when a car with cloudy headlights drives towards you at night - making it dangerous for other drivers too.

You can even fail your WOF for having cloudy headlights!
